GUNNER
Two more days passed and I didnât dare try and follow Vic again. I had hardly slept, getting what little sleep I could when they took her way. Each time, she returned, clean and with new clothes. They were testing her, testing what she could do, and how much she could be controlled. The times between when she left and returned were shortening, which meant she had likely stopped resisting whatever was inside of her more and more.
âI wonât hurt you,â Vic said one day while we both lay quietly on our beds. I was staring at the roof, but I could feel her gaze on me. âI know youâve been wondering. And I know you havenât slept, but it doesnât work like that. I canât control it around them, but here Iâm⦠myself.â
âWell thatâs comforting,â I said, instantly regretting the sarcastic tone I always seemed to have. I sighed. âI know what theyâre doing to you isnât you, Vic. And Iâm going to find a way to stop this.â
âYou canât.â
She was right; there was nothing I could do. They hadnât even bothered with me since Grayson gave them orders to keep me out of whatever trials and tests they were conducting. That fact only made me feel guiltier.
âIâm her nephew,â I said quietly. I felt Vic shift until she was on her side facing me. I did the same. âGovernor Grayson is my aunt. My father was her brother.â
âHow do you know?â
âShe told me,â I said. âItâs why they havenât been doing anything to me, why Iâve been exempt from the torture theyâre putting you through.â
âYou should consider yourself lucky, not feel guilty about it.â Vicâs voice was so soft, such a change from what I knew she held on the inside. To the outside world, she looked fragile like a flower, but I knew she was fragile like a bomb. Dangerous if not dealt with carefully.
âIt doesnât matter if Iâm exempt, Iâm still caged. I canât do anything. I canât help anyone.â I aimed a frustrated punch to my pillow.
âYouâve helped me,â Vic said. âAnd in some ways, you helped Sienna.â
âI betrayed her first,â I yelled. Vic flinched back, and I lowered my voice. âIâm just like my father. Iâm selfish and chose myself over everyone else.â
Vic let out a long breath. She was quiet for some time before she said, âMaybe youâre looking at this situation the wrong way. Sometimes, the best way to trick someone is to make them think youâre on their side first.â
âYou think I should use Grayson?â
âCouldnât hurt.â Vic shrugged.
âHow though?â I mumbled.
She shrugged again. âIâm sure youâll think up a way.â
She was right. I could play the game, probably better than anyone. It was what I was good at, lying, deceiving, tricking. If that was the only way to help, it was exactly what Iâd do.
